He did an awesome job and made me look like a pro at this even though I’m not =P Adopt a pet or save a stray =)
Cat runs into pet door – twice!
No one ever said that Simon was the brightest of cats. His mom’s not too bright, so maybe it’s genetic. Here he runs into the locked pet door not once, but twice. Maybe it was stuck the first time?
Bad Dog Food Ingredients to Avoid
What do they mean by fillers?
Used in low quality, cheap commercial dog foods, fillers are basically put in the dog’s “food” to save the manufacturer money, not to increase nutritional values. Included are products that are not edible and difficult for our pets to digest such as: cereal byproducts, – cottonseed hulls, – crushed peanut shells, – straw, – corn and crushed corncobs, – weeds, and – feathers.
A cheap dog food filled with corn fillers, listed as corn, corn meal, and corn gluten meal should be avoided as this is used as substitute for higher quality animal protein sources.
Fillers that are used are not just tasteless, but actually can hurt your pet as they cause digestive problems and horrible allergies. They can cause digestive problems, allergies, and in immune deficient puppies or older pets can cause severe medical problems. .
What is a by-product?
Found in cheap dog food, meat by-products are euphemisms for parts of animals that wouldn’t be considered edible by any smart consumer. Meat by-products actually do not contain meat. By-products are part of the animals that are left over after the meat has been stripped away from the bone. This disgusting cheap dog food mishmosh would then include heads, feet, entrails, hoofs, lungs, spleens, kidneys, brains, stomachs (still with undigested food inside) bones, blood (some with hormones and medications included) intestines and loads of other carcass parts that are not fit for human consumption.
Also, the boiled down flesh of road kill, zoo animals, and 4-D (dead, diseased, disabled dying) livestock is considered okay with these manufacturers. This also can include dogs and cats that have been euthanized. Avoid dog food with blood meal, which is an inexpensive protein booster. The animal source is usually not stated, and the blood can be contaminated with residues of hormones, or medications.
What is a non-specific meat source?
If the main protein source is listed as “meat” this is to be avoided, It is always mystery meat such as: spoiled rotten meat from the grocery store (Styrofoam wrap and all), – Road kill that has been rotting on the roadside, – heads, feet, skin, hair, feathers, carpel and tarsal joints, and mammary glands are used from the slaughterhouses. Animals that have died from diseases, cancerous tissue and all, – tumors and worm infested organs are also rendered. Injection sites are rendered, blood clots and all. Stomach and unclean bowels are rendered. Contaminated material including blood is rendered. Carcasses with high levels of drugs or pesticides in excess of limits prescribed under the FDA (not fit for human consumption) are rendered.
Everything is pitched into large vats and slowly ground, then cooked at low temps till the grease rises to the top. And consider that this is what is listed on the ingredient list as “animal fat”. The rest of what is remaining is then pressed until the moisture is completely removed, and this dry raw material that is referred to as “meat”, is then used in the cheap dog food brands.
Why are artificial colors, preservatives and flavors used?
Flavor is added, because most pets wouldn’t eat the finished product without some sort of cover up for the horrible smell. These additional flavors are usually from rancid restaurant grease. This grease sometimes sits in dumpsters, out in the sun for weeks. This is what the pet food manufacturers buy to add as flavoring, which is sprayed onto the kibble. Also sugar or corn syrup is used to cover up the bad taste of the inferior kibble.
Different dyes are used to make the food look good to us, the pet owner. Dyes are known carcenogenic causing additives, and I’m quite certain my pet, or yours, does not care what color their food is.
Artificial preservatives are used to extend the shelf life of the dog food. The main ones to avoid are: BHA (butylated hydroxytolulene), propyl gallate, propylene glycol (also used in automotive antifreeze, and is suspected of causing red blood cell damage) and ethoxyquin. These are all potentially cancer causing agents that your pets are eating every day.
This all sounds pretty grim, but rest assured there are many extremely excellent, ultra premium organic dog foods now being manufactured without any of the above crap in them. These highly reputable and conscientious companies have philosophies aimed at providing you and your pet the best of the best when it comes to nutrition and peace of mind.
A lot of pet owners are also now making their own all natural dog food at home, and this is always better than the junk the commercial pet food manufacturers are feeding our pets. It is easy, and comparable in price to buying the premium organic dog food brands, as long as you use a proper nutritionally balanced dog food recipe. You can easily find very good dog food recipe books for sale, that have well rounded nutritious meals to make at home. Also you will be able to find recipes online.

Allergy-free Dog Food – Best Ways To Deal With Your Dog’s Food Allergy
After a hard days work, it’s definitely refreshing to play with your pet dog. For many of us, they are part of our family and we love dogs as much as we love our family members. Like how feel sad when our children or spouse or any other family member feel ill, we have the same feeling towards our dog too when it is ill. Am I right? The worst part is that many times we do not the reason for it to become ill. When we take it to the vet, he would say the ailment is due to food allergy.
You would definitely be worried if you hear that the illness is due to the food that your dog eats. One symptom through which you can identify food allergies in dogs is excessive scractching due to itching. If you closely watch, you can understand that main food items that cause allergy would be corn, soy, wheat, beef, chicken, etc. Don’t ever waste time if you feel your dog is not well. Immediately take it to the vet for diagnose and treatment.
Few symptoms of food allergy in dogs include itching, scratching, licking the foot, biting or chewing his body parts. You may introduce lamb as a subsititute for proteins.
Normally, vets give hypo-allergenic formulas to treat food allergies in dogs and these forumals are quite expensive. The fact is that it is possible to understand food allergies in dogs without even going to the vet. Anti-allergy dog foods are in market, which you may give them to your best friend, dogs. Start giving these allergy-free food items. Lots of nutrients are avialable in these food mixes and are formulated especially for dogs.
You get two variant of dog mixes, one is chicken-based and the other fish protein. Experiment with various food items that are protein rich. Observe keenly and check for the reaction. You can finally understand which food mix your dog likes and at the same time not allergic to it. Stick to this food mix.
Few points to ponder when introducing new food mixes to your pet dog:
a) You should give it for at least six days continuously.
b) Ratio should be 4:1, that is, 4 parts of old food : 1 part of new food
c) Slowly increase this proportion for six days. Once you have started to give the new food mix completely, stick to it for a minimum of seven days.
d) Check for any allergic reaction before you take a call on whether to stick to old food mix or the new one.
It is impossible to solve food allergy at once. Start giving a neutral food. Ensure that it is grain-free. Once you find the protein that is right for your pet, introduce grain to the diet. Check for the reaction. It is definitely possible to save huge amount of money if you start to experiment things by yourself. Like how we require nutrients like vitamins, minerals, proteins, etc., dogs too require a balanaced diet.
You might have two pet dogs in your home, may be even same breed. However, it doesn’t mean that food habits should be similar for both of your pets. One pet may be allergic to certain kind of food mix; however, the same food mix may do good for the other pet. Do not jump into conclusions if a particular food is allergic for one pet, it will be the same for other too.
Once you understand the symptoms, it will definitely be easy for you to know what has to be done to resolve the problem.
Take good care of your pet…all the best!

Pet Trusts Ensure Fluffy Gets Fed After You’re Gone
Dollars & Sense
By Denice Gierach
As published in the Naperville Sun – July 23, 2006
“In a cat’s eye, all things belong to cats.” English proverb
“If dogs could talk, it would take a lot of the fun out of owning one.” Andy Rooney.
In our society today, so many of us live with and care for our pets. Whether they be cats or dogs, our pets have become part of our family. People take their pets with them on vacations and if they are unable to do so, many people have in home pet sitting to make sure that their pet is doing well while they are gone. Many Naperville dogs are dressed with stylish sweaters and some of the smaller dogs may be seeing the sites of Naperville in a dog stroller.
You personally may not be the type of person that would walk your dog in a dog stroller, but most people are very concerned about what happens to their pets in the event of their disability or their death. Who will care for their pets? How can they make sure that their pets are properly cared for and that the persons who will be responsible will have the funds to do that?
One of the new concepts in the estate planning area is that of Pet Trusts. Pet Trusts are currently allowed under the law in 28 states, including Illinois. Illinois has a law that allows trusts for domestic or pet animals. You can now set up a trust for the care of one or more designated animals. The trust will terminate when there is no living animal that is covered by the trust. Although many states allow the pet owner to leave any amount they wish to the pet trust, the Illinois law states that the court may reduce the amount of funds or property held in the trust if it substantially exceeds the amount required for the intended use of the funds.
You can use this trust to ensure that certain people are notified if you are disabled or upon your death so that your pet’s care will be uninterrupted. You can preselect what caretakers you would like to provide this pet care. The trust will state what your wishes are for the care of your pet, including your likes and dislikes, routines, care instructions and wishes regarding burial or cremation. The trust will be funded with an amount of money to cover these costs. The Illinois law exempts the trustee from filing any reports or accounting for the funds.
Normally, the trustee is a different person than the caretaker, as the trustee will need to pass along the balance of the funds left in the trust to another beneficiary of the pet owner as set forth in the trust, or, if none, the funds will be distributed to the heirs of the estate. Instead of leaving the balance of the trust to your heirs, this may be the time for you to be a “hero” for the less fortunate pets by leaving the balance to a quality organization such as the Naperville Area Humane Society.
Your pets and all of the pets that come through the humane societies will thank you.
