If you have read some of my prior published articles on Pets and guidelines for Pet care, you will find the information not only from my very own real experiences, but valuable tips and guidelines as a Pet owner.

As I have mentioned in prior articles, Ive visited many countries, where ever my work would take me, primarily Asia. I have learned and experienced many cultures, and now live in Northern Thailand , surrounded by jungle. All the creatures you can possibly imagine, something like living on Discovery Channel, but with real life daily experiences, with cobras, eagles, exotic jungle birds, the works.

You may think of how frightening living with cobras might be, but actually, most are very shy, and you really do not encounter them very often. Did you know, they sometimes make a bark like noise in the jungle, that is certainly a good indication to stay clear.

This was a very unique experience with a wild jungle bird, not found in any books, nor can any Vet. hospital help cure this experience, but sadly a true story.

My very kind Thai neighbors gave me two jungle birds in cages, as a polite welcome to the village gift. Those who might be sensitive to a wild jungle bird in a cage, rest assured, I asked, and yes they were left in the nest alone deep in the jungle, and would have died if not cared for.

Well, now I had to learn to speak some Thai, since both birds could. There are Mina birds as you know , all around, but these two are of a different type, and were taught to speak Thai phrases in some cases. My first thought, and tip, since a natural reaction caring for pets, was to let them go back to a natural jungle environment.

But I was told they could not survive the jungle, there are just so many creatures in the food chain, they just would not make it on their own. So, I decided to give them the best of care as possible.

My favorite was light two toned grey colored bird that spoke 23 words , and some phrases in Thai, and could bark like a German Shepard, since he grew up next to one.

What a character, I actually taught him English words, and how to laugh, since Thai people have the best sense of humor, in my experience, they really thought that was funny, a laughing bird, one common language between us , as I was still learning to speak Thai, and North Thai , a bit different.

I really enjoyed these two new friends, probably only ones who could understand this stranger from another country. I built two very large cages, seemed they might like that better, and placed one at a neighbors house right along the jungle, so he could talk to the wild birds. This was about 300 hundred feet away.

I would get up early and talk to him across the trees, or at least whistle bird songs. Thais were amazed, he would talk back to me every morning, what a great song he could sing, I think he was happy there.

If I missed a morning, he would call for me. The Thais couldnt believe it, and with Thai communication everyone knew this story, simply small village, a few hundred people, big news.

This great beautiful bird, lived on for many years. As a wild animal, I made sure they received their natural jungle foods, which is a tip to remember, very important for their health.

I continued to talk to him all the time, until one day, I went over to see him. I worked and traveled a lot, so not always home. My neighbors stopped me short from their house,something must have happened. They would not explain to me, possibly a cultural kindness where they did not want me to be upset. Thai culture and politeness is something we could all learn from.

Well, my bird companion had passed away while I was traveling on business a month before.
The neighbors explained he would call to me, and no answer, as if he needed to communicate something, hard to imagine a bird. But, for the few weeks I was home I had been talking across the jungle to him, actually how could this be if he had died a month ago?

Thai culture is sensitive to spirits, so with all do respect, I listened very carefully to this unique story when explained carefully over time. When I was traveling, he had met a wild bird, same type.

She would come and they would talk daily, so on my return, he had in fact passed away, but it was his new mate that continued on, from the same location every morning talking to me, and as the Thais may have believed, it was his spirit communicating to me through her .

Now, I dont know much about spirits, but its believed he lived a good life, but he passed away from a broken heart as the story was told. I do believe I took the best of care for him during his lifetime.

This story has been passed along between villages for years now, people ask me, does youre bird still sing to you with the morning sunrise. I believe they are referring to the spirit of the bird. On occasions the female returns every few months from the jungle, and calls for me.

Now some might think Ive lived near the jungle to long, but these are true Pet Lover adventures. I dont have a cure all magic pill for a birds broken heart, but might add, sometimes the extra care, kindness, and common sense will greatly help your pets longevity and health.

This is the best tip I can offer for all pets. For any wild pets, if at all possible, they really need their own natural environment . So if you ever have the opportunity to have a wild pet, please think twice , and make the right decision for the animals benefit. For a good pet, there are so many options with domesticated animals.

The kindness to this bird, has returned to me over the years through my neighbors. They know how much I liked this bird, and how well I took care of him, and now the kindness has returned. One might consider this a spiritual event, and thats not my expertise, but certainly made good neighbor friends as a result of a bit of kindness. Thats simply just my best advise to pet lovers. Pets can have a long happy life, with just that extra bit of kindness.

For those pet owners that truly love their pets it is likely they have photos of their dog or cat at home. Being able to have a portrait of their pets would be very appealing. A snapshot of Sparky catching a Frisbee or a lovely photo of Snowball curled up with a ball of yarn can be priceless. If you are handy with a camera and are a pet lover yourself this could be your pet business calling.

Pooper Scooper Service

This job may not be the favorite out of the bunch, but it is a definite moneymaker. People do not enjoy picking up their dogs excrement out of their yard. Most will gladly pay to have this service provided for them. This is a job that takes only minutes to do and after the job is done you walk away with money in hand. You need only a few supplies such as rubber gloves and boots. You will also need trash bags or buckets and a scooper or shovel. The only other thing you may need is a strong stomach or weak sense of smell. Its a simple but smelly job.

Pet Day Care

During the nine to five of a workday, pets are left home alone in pet crates or in a fenced in yard. Many pet owners feel deep guilt over this. After all pets are part of the family and owners do not like to think of their animals being lonely at home all day. This is why dog day cares are becoming more popular. Your job would be to walk and play with the dog or other pet. Provide affection and activities until the owner takes their pet home for the day. Its a great service for the pet and the owner, as well as an enjoyable job for you. Keep these pet oriented jobs in mind and you may be well on your way to running your very own pet business in two shakes of a dogs tail.

In our society today, so many of us live with and care for our pets.  Whether they be cats or dogs, our pets have become part of our family.  People take their pets with them on vacations and if they are unable to do so, many people have in home pet sitting to make sure that their pet is doing well while they are gone.  Many Naperville dogs are dressed with stylish sweaters and some of the smaller dogs may be seeing the sites of Naperville in a dog stroller.

 One of the new concepts in the estate planning area is that of Pet Trusts.  Pet Trusts are currently allowed under the law in 28 states, including Illinois.  Illinois has a law that allows trusts for domestic or pet animals.  You can now set up a trust for the care of one or more designated animals.  The trust will terminate when there is no living animal that is covered by the trust.  Although many states allow the pet owner to leave any amount they wish to the pet trust, the Illinois law states that the court may reduce the amount of funds or property held in the trust if it substantially exceeds the amount required for the intended use of the funds.

 You can use this trust to ensure that certain people are notified if you are disabled or upon your death so that your pet’s care will be uninterrupted.  You can preselect what caretakers you would like to provide this pet care.  The trust will state what your wishes are for the care of your pet, including your likes and dislikes, routines, care instructions and wishes regarding burial or cremation.  The trust will be funded with an amount of money to cover these costs.  The Illinois law exempts the trustee from filing any reports or accounting for the funds.

 Normally, the trustee is a different person than the caretaker, as the trustee will need to pass along the balance of the funds left in the trust to another beneficiary of the pet owner as set forth in the trust, or, if none, the funds will be distributed to the heirs of the estate. Instead of leaving the balance of the trust to your heirs, this may be the time for you to be a “hero” for the less fortunate pets by leaving the balance to a quality organization such as the Naperville Area Humane Society.

Pets aren’t immune from injury and aging. Sometimes life leaves your pet with a physical handicap. There are pet owners who can’t handle this and end up putting their pet to sleep. I wonder if most pet owners are aware of the many resources available to them.

Personally, I could never put my pet down due to their having a physical handicap. There are products available and informative websites that enable a full life for an injured or senior pet.  Here are some things you can do as a pet owner to make your physically handicapped pet’s life a bit easier.

If you have a dog whose sight is impaired, what would you do?  Seriously, what would you do?  Think of your pet’s surroundings. You wouldn’t rearrange the furniture, right? And you’d probably be more conscious of picking things up off the floors. You would want to put gates in front of dangerous places like balconies, swimming pools or hot tubs. You can even find protective headgear for her so she doesn’t smash into something and injure herself. You might also softly speak to her before you approach or touch her so she’s not startled. Help her out by working with her other senses. Things like using a fountain water dish where the noise will guide her to her dish. There are many ways to appeal to her other senses to assist her to recognize where she is. For example, use a different shape and texture of pet bed or mat in different rooms. I think you get the idea.

What if your dog is hard of hearing?  First and foremost, make sure she’s contained. If she can’t hear danger sounds then she needs to be in a fenced area or on a leash for her protection. Work out signals through training using blinking lights. You can use a flashlight or just toggle your light switch back and forth.  Just because your dog can’t hear doesn’t mean she can’t learn! Of course, your facial expressions and hand gestures will also be part of the training so be aware of them.

We’ve all seen a dog whose hind end is harnessed to a rig with two wheels when their back legs are injured and they run around quite nicely. At first, you say “so sad”, but when you think about it, the alternative is so much worse. Probably the biggest thing you should be monitoring as a pet owner of a pet with mobility issues is their weight. The last thing they need is extra strain on their functioning limbs. There are all types of devices to aid your pet in mobility.

In closing, there are many simple steps we as pet owners can take to afford a loving and fulfilling life to a pet with special needs.

Your dog is a part of your family and you want your pet to live a long and very healthy life. Your dog is always there for you, ready to play, snuggle, always loyal. Your pet relies on you, as their owner, to take care of them, give them a warm place to sleep, water to drink and healthy dog food to eat. They are not able to choose what is best for them.

Are you looking to buy the generic brand to save a few dollars? Are all dog foods the same? The answer is no, they’re not. There are so many ingredients put into dog food that you can’t even pronounce. Saving a few dollars now could cost you later at the vet’s office when your baby starts to have some health issues. Surprisingly some premium pet foods are comparable in price because you actually feed less as they are more nutrient dense than their cheap counterparts. So many dog foods have mainly fillers that they label as protein. They are things such as soybean meal, corn meal, corn gluten meal, and maize wheat. These may be sources of protein, but they are not enough for your dog’s health. They need meat.

There are also food colorings in dog food, and oddly enough, the dogs don’t care what color the food is, all the marketing is for us, the pet owner. Food dyes can be made from chemicals. There have been many dog trainers that correlate food dye with hyperactive dogs, as it has been associated with hyperactive children. Chemical preservatives like BHA and BHT should not be on the ingredient list and should be avoided.

Another form the pet food manufacturers use is the by-product protein. These include necks, feet, intestines, lungs, ligaments, head and undeveloped eggs. Some pet foods contain no active cultures and other digestive aids. This is why some dogs have bloating, gas and bowel issues. Without this very important ingredient you pet might not be absorbing what nutrition is in the food! In the long run this can be very unhealthy.

The first ingredient should be a meat as it the most natural protein source for dogs. As do humans, animals benefit from fruits and vegetables and proper carbohydrate consumption.
